Respected Ambassador,
Reg: Lifting ban on Jallikattu / Eru Thazhuval (Bull
Embracing)
We are Indian Citizens of Tamil Ethnicity living in
Rochester NY. Back in our home, a 3000 year long traditional sport of Eru
Thazhvual (Bull Embracing) has been banned by the Supreme Court of India. This
sport has been conducted part of our Ethnic Festival Pongal for the past 3000
years. In this sport, Country Bulls are let out on a field and are embraced by
players. The bull rarely gets hurt in this sport.
Citing some cruelty done to some of the bulls, Animal
Welfare of India (AWI) and PETA – People for Ethical Treatment of Animals –
have filed a case in Supreme Court for banning this sport and Supreme court
banned it. This ban has put all of us Tamils in despair as we could not
continue our tradition. The students and youth in India are protesting on the
streets of Tamil Nadu requesting the Central Government to take an action to
lift the ban.
The ban could be lifted if the Central Government passes an
ordinance removing the bull from the list of animals that “shall not be
exhibited or trained as a performing animal”. We, as law-abiding citizens of
India urge the Central Government to take necessary steps to lift the ban on Jallikattu
and protect our Tamil Identity and Tradition.
We thank you very much for considering this petition.
